ABOUT ME

Hi! My name is Britta Winans. I’m a multimedia journalist and freeride skier out of Lake Tahoe, California. I graduated in June of 2024 from the University of Denver with a degree in journalism and a double minor in marketing and psychology.

I’m primarily drawn to telling stories about the outdoors: how people interact with natural spaces, the conflict that comes from those interactions, how we can create sport and explore identity outside, how art and nature interact, how structural inequalities play a part in all of it- that kind of realm.

I’m a firm believer that everything is connected, and I think it’s important to document some of these outdoor stories about skiing, mountaineering, surfing, whatever it may be, from a holistic perspective. It’s impossible to capture the essence of such activities without talking about the human experience- and it’s impossible to talk about the human experience without talking about gender, race, socio-economic statuses, accessibility, and so forth. That being said, taking this holistic perspective is something I hold to utmost importance as I start my journalism career.

My blog is a space for me to document daily thoughts and worthy experiences. I’m 22- doing cool things, grappling with identity, and learning a whole lot. Getting something out there every week is a way for me to make sense of things and write/create more consistently. Hopefully some of you can resonate in one way or another.

The intersection between my skiing & journalistic pursuits.

I’ve been skiing since before I can remember. Before all else, skiing is a hobby. It’s something that I just genuinely love doing, and because of that, I find myself doing it a whole lot. I grew up skiing at Palisades Tahoe, and through the years, found identity and community through it. Some of the highest and lowest points in my life have been connected to this sport. Art and storytelling are a huge part of what skiing is, and I hope to contribute in that realm as much as I can. Through competing in the Freeride World Tour this year, to film/photo projects, to just skiing for my mental health, it’s a world I’m heavily involved in & I can’t wait to see what comes of it!
